hair...short or long?

well, my haircut didn't exactly turn out like my inspiration photo. in fact, it's startlingly similar to a haircut i had 6 years ago (making it dated in my eyes). i spent a few days hiding and periodically crying out, 'what have i done?!?' but i think i'm getting over the shock of losing over 10 inches. it'll grow out, like it always does, and maybe this is a sign that i should get a new stylist. i can never decide whether i want short or long hair except right after a drastic cut. so, hopefully this time next year it'll be well past my shoulders (it grows very very quickly).

on another note, can anyone recommend a good pair of skinny (but not too skinny) jeans that don't stretch out after two wears? i'm wearing my new pair of R13s from Barneys Coop, and they bag out terribly in the seat. jcrew's toothpick and matchstick jeans both fit awkwardly on me, especially right above the knee. i used to wear earnest sewn keatons, so maybe harlan would be a good fit. acne might work, too. i like my martin straight legs, but they're too lowcut. i need something closer to an 8 inch rise.

any thoughts about this never ending dilemma?

i am considering this DR K SH D W pair but am unsure about sizing. i definitely prefer a slightly faded black wash.

Erica, I think you look cute (and Leon is getting so big!)!
The cut does not look dated. As for the jeans:
I used to wear J.Crew jeans all of the time, and now I've switched to Madewell (J.Crew but different!) they have a wider range of styles (and washes) that fit different body types. The shop girls are always a huge help with finding the style that its. Plus there I can adhere to my rule of not paying over $100 for a pair of jeans!

It sounds like you did the "I had a kid and feel different and want to chop off my hair" thing. I've totally done that. Twice. But I think it looks cute, after you adjust you will love it for spring and summer I bet.

Also, I recently got a pair of skinny jeans at Zara that are actually great. Citizens "Ava" also look great, are super comfy, and the rise isnt embarassing either.

oh my goodness, I LOVE your hair cut!! I think short hair definitely suits you. it's so fresh!

I too am on the skinny jean hunt. I've been looking for some SUPER skinny black jeans. if you find some, let me know!

i think your haircut is pretty darn adorable. i do that every year or so, too. god love hair for growing back!

i'm currently wearing my new favorite jeans. they're j brand. i'm new to the skinny jean party and these have won me over. so much so that i need another pair. or two.

I think your hair looks fab!! I'm am seriously obsessed with James Twiggy jeans..have them in ink and black and can't rave about them enough...I have a 2 yr old so they are mom friendly - ie not too low at the playground but still very cool! I finally had to give up my Earnest Sewns and Current Elliots because I couldn't deal with the hiking up, etc...

I hope that this doesn't come out the wrong way, but your hair looks much cuter now (and you were cute before too!). Really, I love it.

Erica, I like your hair! Believe me i know what its like to have to find a new stylist.

I like your new hair, its refreshing, did you get a body perm ?

i like it short! what do you think of current elliot jean leggings? I have them in black, blue and grey b/c I love them so much. They are so comfy but slightly structured on the waistband so they're not complete leggings.

Believe us all when we say you look adorable/fresh/youthful! Love the cut, and you may find it is more like your inspiration cut in another month or two. You should definitely enjoy your super new haircut - soon enough it'll be long again (you must know how fast time passes now...).

I have always had good luck with Sass and Bide jeans. They are very comfortable and do not bag in the bum.

i agree with everyone else, it looks fab! that was my totally honest first reaction to the pic before i saw any of your text.

Love the hair Erica! I just chopped mine and added bangs. I wanted thicker bangsfor awhile and my stylist in new haven wouldn't do it because she didn't think they would suit me. Now that we're in dc I made a trip to visit my stylist from college (who remembered me after 11 years) and she suggested the bangs before I did! I guess my point is that sometimes a new stylist will have the different perspective that you're looking for. That being said, the new shorter length looks great on you. Give yourself a week or so to figure it out.

I like your haircut (cute little fellow, too!) - -
So happy you posted this question for your readers. I'm on the same hunt so will be checking back to see what everyone has to say!

I am with everyone else - the haircut is cute and looks great on you!

sorry, my track record with skinny jeans is not good so i have given up and don't have any recommendations for you. but i love the look of skinny jeans on others. let us know if you find "the one"!

i always have regret when i chop off my long hair. you look adorable, though! how did you get those waves, asian girl? i want some. :)

i love my acne hex skinny jeans. they are super comfortable and the perfect faded black wash (i think the wash is called "cash"). i've had them for a couple of years and i finally notice them getting a bit loose around the waist, but they still look great. i just have to yank them up now and then, or wear a belt.

I like it! Your hair is thicker than the inspiration photo's model, so maybe that is why it looks different, but I think you look super chic.

I love you hair, I am on my way to chop mine after your inspiration blog post inspired me too. I have data on cords]
I hated the Jcrew matchstick cords (they get baggy) but I like my Madewell Straight Rail cords: stiffer and better fit although a bit too low cut for me. Have you tried Madewell in the Natick Mall? While at the Natick Mall, swing by Levi's, sometimes there are good fits there.

I swear by J brand jeans, though they are rather skinny. But I've worn mine for two weeks now (is that gross?) and they haven't stretched out a bit yet.

I could see you with chin-length hair and it being even cuter than it already is with your waves.

I also really love J Brand jeans. I wear the mid-rise ones with 12" leg opening. They're skinny enough to wear tucked into boots, but not skinny to the point where they look like leggings.

Erica, I like your hair cut. It looks really cute. Ernie the owner of Cocohead (hair salon) is wonderful, in case you want to try a different hair dresser. Regarding the jeans, I like the Always Skinny from the Gap. They have mid rise, and the fabric is super soft.

you look even prettier with your hair off your shoulders, honest.
i know this will sound insane but you can always take to your hair with shears and adjust whatever you think necessary.
last time i saw a $tylist here in town she (for the 2nd time) gave me a longish bob with far too much layering (feathering more like it). i was so distraught about it i went in the bathroom after a couple of days and cut about 3" off straight away making it chin length. i felt 100% better and looked more like myself afterward. i now only trust my sister to cut my hair and she is not a stylist by trade.

i LOVE your hair! it's adorable. i freaked out when i cut mine off too. it's only natural. and i also felt outdated at first because i had my hair long for such an extended period of time, and short hair was a part of my past. but i think bobs are just so cute. long hair is sexy, short hair is cute. i'm having fun with the cute look for a while, and then when i get sick of it i'll grow it out again. but don't worry! you really look so great.

i'd like to try the ernest sewn harlan jeans on too.

Erica, you look great--you can really see your face with the new cut, and I love the wave! I bet you will settle into the style in the next few weeks--a half inch of growth or so after a new cut always makes a huge difference, and by summertime it will be long enough for a cute short ponytail. I personally love Seven's skinny jeans. They do not have as much stretch as the J Brand (which I also own) and never sag in the bottom. The only trick if you have slightly larger calves like me is to pull them up, but once they are on, they stay on great. I picked up a pair last year on eBay brand new for $35! If you go J Brand, I'd get a size down from your normal size because they stretch like mad for me. Good luck!

erica, i think that short hair suits you - i love its natural body. but, I may be a bit biased since I did a similar chop over the summer ;) Haven't cut it since - over 6 months - but have an appointment soon.

as for skinny jeans - being with child, I'm leaning towards more forgiving silhouettes these days.

good luck.

I think your hair looks great!

How about APC New Cures? I bought a pair on sale in December, and I absolutely love them. They do stretch, but most of the stretching happens in the first couple of weeks, after which they reach a fairly stable size.

oh i think your hair looks great!

Your hair does look cute, Erica. I like it and think you should have fun playing with it and seeing the new things you can do.

As for jeans, I like Earnest Sewn ginger (skinny, high waist), but they aren't always easy to find. I want to second the love for Madewell--cheap and lots of really flattering styles. They'll also help you find the ones that work for you. If you try them, size down because they really do stretch out (and they tend to run large--I'm a 27 in them, a 29-30 in Earnest Sewn).

The haircut is very flattering - it is such an adjustment though, I'm sure!

I also vote for J. Brand (I bought my lone pair at Bird on sale -- I haven't looked at the Bird sale yet but it might be fruitful). I also think that Club Monaco makes great black straight-legs that are also a pretty skinny fit, a la the Martin jeans (which I also love, but are indeed low-rise.)

Try the stilts from AG, too! They're awesome.

joining the general consensus that your hair does look cute, but i've been there before, and i learnt that you can do a lot with bobby pins!

You look great!! With your face shape, you could go even shorter - Peter Pan-esque - or try a different type of bob.

your hair looks great! i like it short. but i know what you mean about getting used to it, i periodically cut my hair off and regret it.

thought i'd throw in a rec for good ole-fashioned levis. they're the only jeans i wear now. mine don't stretch out at all (just make sure you buy them snug), they're relatively cheap, and they have a variety of both skinny and straight cuts.

Margaret said...

i actually love your hair just like that. i wish my hair would be like that when it's that length but it's wavier than yours.
one more brand to add: stella mccartney. best on yoox where they can be quite cheap $75-150.

I like the haircut. You always look cute:)
I really like the new gap premium denim -I have the always skinny and they seem to have a higher rise than most, but not too high.
they don't gap at the back waist either -which I HATE.

Totally diggin' the shorter 'do! Very cute & refreshing!

I sympathize with the jean search, Erica!

Surprisingly, I discovered that the mens' Levi 510 super skinny fit me! Urban Outfitters has the best selection: http://search.urbanoutfitters.com/?q=Levi+510 I have the Rigid wash and love them. No vanity sizing tho. I'm a 24 in the same current eliot boyfriend jeans you have, and a 26 in Acne, but a 28 in these.

Good luck!
