boat shoes

in the craze of packing, i have somehow misplaced nearly all of my slip-on spring shoes and sandals. i was going to buy a pair of sperry top siders at the tannery, but this lighter hue (only available at jcrew) beckons. any thoughts on sizing (esp. width)?

oh, i wore my old top siders to shreds and have been thinking about a new pair as well. these are lovely. from what i recall, they run "true to size" in that i used to wear an 8 and the 8 fit me perfectly. they did require a little breaking in for me, as i have oddly-shaped feet, but it didn't take long for them to become my most comfortable shoes.

if, on the other hand, you decide to go for the bass penny loafers (also at jcrew right now), i would warn against it unless your feet are mostly narrow, except at the heel, where they become quite wide.

thanks, valerie. i used to be an 8-8.5, and now i'm somewhere closer to a 9. i wish these weren't $10 more, but the color is probably worth it. now all i need is a free shipping coupon for jcrew!

I just got a pair of the patent leather Sperry's and LOVE them. I think they are fairly TTS, not running especially narrow. I have a foot that sometimes gets squeezed in regular sizes but isn't wide enough to wear actual wides. Hope that helps.
PS--I'm sure you know this but just in case: there are a boatload (pardon the pun) of J.Crew blogs out there with a ton of info with shipping, 20% coupons, etc. J. Crew Aficionada is the big one if you are not familiar.

I found a pair of these brand new at the goodwill in davis square five years ago...(five bucks!) they fit very true to size, and they conform really well to the shape of your feet. they just get more and more comfy too.

$5!! that goodwill always drives me bonkers. i never have the patience to dig through the bins and racks. i guess i've been missing out, though. glad to hear they're comfy.

rebecca,
i'm glad to hear that slightly wide feet are ok with the regular widths.
the free shipping is usually for $150 or more, so i've hesitated in the past, but maybe i could buy a few extra things and then return them if i don't like them?

I have a pair and I love them - they run true to size, but stretch a little, so the laces are fantastic because they allow you to control how tightly they are on your feet.

and i must confess...i found a pair...brand new at a charity shop for $8...
super comfy

i have gone through a few pairs of these and find they tend to run a bit large. i am an 8 in most shoes but get top-siders (and keds sneakers) in a 7.5. if you go to a j.crew store and order it from the "red phone" then you will get free shipping and they send it to your house. if you have a student ID kicking around still you can also get 10% off. at least that's what they do at the j.crew here. i have narrower feet but the laces actually go all the way from the heels so they are pretty adjustable and you can tighten them (or loosen them) as need be. also, the leather becomes supple very quickly!

I could be wrong, but I believe you get free shipping if you buy a full priced item from the J.Crew brick & mortar store using their red phone. The Boyfriend used this to get work chinos. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it's something to look into to save the shipping costs.

no idea on sizing, but don't forget they still have the student/teacher 15% off discount for full-price items, so in most cases that saves you the cost of shipping. works for online too.
