the holiday dress

so, i was flipping through my anthropologie catalog when i saw this dress. i admit, i'm a sucker for 'ethnic' prints. but it made me wonder, do people actually have parties that require dressing up? maybe i'm living in the wrong city, or maybe i'm pursuing the wrong career, but the last time i dressed nicely for a party or outing was for my wedding. i can't even begin to imagine a life that requires such pretty dresses. maybe it's because my day consists of research, writing, dishwashing, cat litter duty, errands, eating in front of the computer, and other mundane things. i love simple, unpretentious get-togethers with dear friends, but sometimes i wonder if dressing-up would makes things even more fun. the problem is, you don't want to stick out like a sore thumb, and, well, most of the parties i attend are extremely casual.

Danya dress, Mayle, $770

Leda dress, Mayle, $665

Calico dress, Mayle, $620

the photo doesn't do much for me, but i saw it on a shopgirl and it seemed perfect for both parties and a fun work environment.

i know exactly what you're talking about! i always dream about dressing up for parties, but my life here is mostly mundane also. when i lived in new york i wore party dresses more. it's fun to dream though, right? you should have a christmas cocktail party and require your guests to dress up. i might do the same.

those dresses are great. i keep looking at the mayle calico dress and thinking the bottom part would make a good gray wool high-waisted skirt. what do you think?

it's funny, but i can only imagine people living in sf or nyc having dress-up cocktail parties. i should try and do the same this year. why should they have all the fun?

i think a high-waisted gray wool skirt would be really beautiful. Not too snug, not too loose. apparently the dress has pockets. it might be fun to add a little volume to the skirt that way.

the leda dress is stunning! i think it can be worn casually or dressed up.

hey e, do you by chance have the fall 2006 APC catalog? i'm trying to find a pic of the military dress (that came in beige and a black), but i never got the catalog that year.

s--
no, i don't have the fall 2006 catalog anymore. i must have thrown it out. is the dress you have in mind similar to the military dress in cognac and black on their website right now? i have that dress in lilac from spring 2007. i can't remember if they modified the dress much. there was a short-sleeve light-cotton version too, i think with a belt.

hey e,

it's not that one - i know which one you are referring to.

it is a shirt dress without a collar. it has long sleeves and it is slightly cinched at the waist. they had the model wearing it in a camel color on the website.

thanks though!
