what i wore in the 90s.

chelsea's posts about 90's fashion, including lace-up boots, made me nostalgic for my old dr. martens. while home, i went through my old clothes. the docs were nowhere to be found, but i did try on a few things from elementary and high school.

st. joseph's school uniform skirt, c.1993-94 (a K-8 school). i usually wore this with knee-high white socks and a white polo shirt. navy hoody in the winter. we hemmed the skirts as short as possible, of course.

i shopped at the gap, banana republic, nordstrom, and goodwill for most of the 90s. this skirt is from banana republic. it was too small even back then. i'm shocked i was able to button it. c.1994

an utterly nondescript olive shift dress from benneton. even classic clothing is often 'dated' by slight changes, but this dress has held up pretty well. c. 1996

my favorite dress. the silk is just as soft and luxurious now as it was 13 years ago. it reminded me of mid 90's prada and was a catalyst for my obsession with 50s dresses. from banana republic, c. 1997

one of my mom's many dresses from the 70s, which i wore throughout high school. many were custom-made in korea and have such fantastic prints.

I had nearly the clone of that butterfly dress! I loved it so much that I wore it to bits, then kept the bits for years until I finally threw it away.

Worn with combat boots and Converse.

Oh, the memories.

(And I am impressed you still can fit into all that stuff! Holy geez.)

Ha, so fun! I don't think I have a single item of clothing from the 90s anymore. I wore a plaid kilt all throughout high school! It was kind of awesome to not have to think about clothes.

I have a lovely, classic black wool stretch pencil skirt from a small Chicago atelier called "Wear in Good Health". Bought it around 1991 and it still looks good. Now I wish I had purchased more from them.

The 90s were pretty tragic for me, fashion-wise.

This is such an adorable series of pictures. When you wrote about searching for your Dr. Martens, it really took me back. When I graduated from college and got my first job in NY, I thought that it was time for me to dress like an adult, so I bagged up nearly all of my clothes and gave them away to the Salvation Army. I still regret getting rid of my Kelly green lace up Docs and perfectly worn in flannels, but like to think they found a loving home with someone else. The other day I was walking to school and saw a girl wearing an "I *Heart* Grunge" teeshirt. It cracked me up. Everything does come back, but you are right that the subtle lines and changes will often put a piece of clothing squarely in a time period. Thank you for all the great memories!

Still lamenting my perfectly good and perfectly worn docs :( I also had some choice 70s clothing from my mom and gram that I wore till they fell apart.
Those were the days!
