Annette and Julien

A few nights ago I was up much too late and was surprised to see the SA Annette blazer from last winter in my size at Saks for $170. I had seen it on sale a long while ago, but at some point it was completely sold out. I couldn't resist, so I ordered it (middle image). I still want the Julien in black as well as the Danny pant for interviews. The reality of applying for jobs is finally hitting me, and my closet lacks the building blocks of a solid work wardrobe.

The question on my mind is whether the Danny pants in red would be appropriate for an interview or campus visit. I can already tell that I'm going to need a lot of help with outfit ideas this winter!

The Julien jacket is really nice! I hope it works for you. I think red pants would be appropriate for a campus visit, but maybe a little too flashy for the actual interview. I know that things vary from discipline to discipline and department to department. In my rather conservatively-dressed history department, people would definitely notice those pants. My personal goal for professional events is to look nice and put together, but otherwise unremarkable.

i would probably avoid red pants for history, maybe ok for american studies and art/architecture history. it's so hard to know, which is why i guess people err on the side of conservative.

you're right though, it's best not to attract too much attention (good or bad).

I think red pants are becoming one of those classic items to have in your closet. that being said, I think it all depends on who you're interviewing with. someone closer to your age might get it as the fashionable item that they are, someone older might think you're being flashy or too "look at me". I love them. I say go for it for the less conservative interviews for sure!!

While I agree that standards vary from field to field, a good rule of thumb is to make your performance the memorable aspect of the interview, not any piece of clothing. Having been on the other side of job searches, I've heard some surprising things re. what interviewers remember about candidates! If I had to choose, I'd go with great shoes over red trousers -- and the cropped Danny pants looks like they'd show off footwear to good effect.

thanks joyce, it's always good to hear perspectives from the other side of job searches!

i love the red pants, but i should probably think about shoes first. i can't walk in heels, so i'm thinking loafers...

I am also applying to American Studies and History jobs this year, and my partner is in Art History, and I agree that in terms of fashion leeway the order would be Art History, American Studies, then History. I'm curious though, for a winter interview or campus visit, will you wear socks? I always gravitate toward slightly cropped tapered pants but then don't know what to do once it gets cold. Booties I guess?

I love these pants. Oddly, my husband has an allergy to capri pants for some unknown reason - the only thing he has ever commented on. He did not say a peep about my caramel colored leather APC shorts that I cannot find a way to wear "casually" but capri pants drive him nuts. I do like the look and these are beautiful.

I love the red pants - they could be toned down with tops, etc. They look conservative with a twist. I still shudder at conservative, a throwback to my very early secretarial days. Cheap pinstripe et al, urgh!

There are always shoes with a slight platform at heel and toe if you desire the height? Loafers and oxfords are perfect too, of course.
