isabel marant etoile--baki coat

top photo of the ben coat, from nitty gritty
bottom photo of baki coat from Worthwhile

i dithered for too long and now the Baki coat is nowhere to be found. i've spent all day emailing and calling shops in the States, Canada, and even Australia. i even drove to NYC yesterday with leon--ostensibly to check out the Mayle pop-up shop. no luck. at least we had yummy dosas at Hampton Chutney with stephanie. well, it looks like my search was in vain. maybe i'll be able to buy it on ebay someday....

edit: got it at barneys!

les amis in seattle has it in anthracite (size 2), and the Ben coat, which is a longer version with 3 buttons. i used to go to this shop back when i lived on queen anne hill, such a lovely space.
the corner shop in paddington, australia has the baki in a size 2, also, if anyone is interested in doing a long-distance order.
J+O has the Baki in mocha.

erica -- i saw one just yesterday at the barneys co-op in chevy chase. it was a grey size 1, hopefully what you're looking for!

all of the co-op sales associates that i've talked to have on the phone have confused the baki with the leopold boucle coat (double breasted). hopefully chevy chase has the right one...thanks for the tip, joyce!

got it, in grey, at the barneys in chestnut hill. there's supposedly a few floating around (chicago co-op and las vegas flagship), as of this morning.

Yay! I'm happy you were able to find it! I wore mine for the first time today since it was so chilly out.

Congrats, it's a worthy purchase. I fell in love all over again with my Bator coat lately.
I'm sure you experienced this rush of excitement when you get something you thought you couldn't get, right?!

there's truly nothing like successfully tracking down something! i love how soft and cuddly the Baki is. i wish i had been able to see the Bator in person.

oooh lucky girl. i don't even dare walk past the IM stores...too tempting

erica, the bator is made of a thick tweedy/wooly herringbone type weave, much like many men's suit jackets i have seen. composition is 50% wool, just a bit more than the baki. even though i have not seen the baki in person, the baki seems to be a much better value than the bator. i kind of wish i had waited a year, but as the saying goes, hind sight is 20/20.

the baki is very soft and snuggly. the bator sounds more like a traditional overcoat. the price likely reflects the material?

romaine said...

^ yes, i am sure that the greater price for the bator is partly for the material, but i don't think it justifies the difference of 250 or more (i can't remember the exact price of bator). at least it is a classic style that should last years.
would love to see how you wear the baki sometime on your blog!
