a.p.c. plaid cape

i went to stel's intending to buy the yellow peacoat and left with the plaid cape instead. the peacoat is wonderful, but it wouldn't get me very far this winter. plus, i already have a peacoat from lyell. still, if you couldn't ask for a nicer peacoat. the fabric is light and softer than your favorite sweater, which is such a welcome respite from the stiff wool typical of most peacoats.

anyway, this cape seemed (at the time) to be more practical. i think it'll look quite darling on my bicycle rides this autumn.

*off to california for the next week!

i (heart) this cape. the plaid is perfect -- vintage-y but not too "lumberjack."

totally with you on the bicycle riding. i'm in the market for a vintage schwinn myself.

I love it. I usually don't like capes but this is amazing and looks great on you. I have the Lyell peacoat in the light brown/white, btw!

bicycle riding in the cape is fantastic: it clearly looks great when you're in motion (i.e. second pic).

darling while riding a bike is a massive understatement.
!!!
So awesome I don't even know where to begin. I have been in the market for a cape and this has convinced me i need one in my life, pretty much immediately.

also - that rachel comey belt is divine. and that dress looks beautiful and comfortable. sigh.

i feel like i need to go shopping posthaste. good grief.

(have fun in california!)

ooh that's lovely - i liked it in the catalogue but it's even better on you! i just bought the printed dress from A Small Collection - so hard to resist new fall stuff these days...

i didn't think i was a cape person, but this one was too much fun to refuse.

moya-
my Lilly dress is arriving tomorrow. i checked out the inhabit sale, but it doesn't look like much is left in terms of cashmere.

erin-
the printed dress is my favorite piece from her fall collection! now is definitely a dangerous time for shopping. all i want are new fall things, and winter sales seem so very far away.

Gorgeous cape Erica, please post pictures of your dress, I can't believe Mayle is closing.

i'm super bummed, but the mayle dress didn't fit me at all! it was hugely baggy in the arm openings, and in a moment of weakness, i decided to return it. pregnant or not, i think a 4 or 6 would have been a better fit for me. hopefully i can find it on ebay someday. it was really sad for me to return it, knowing that mayle is closing.

how have you been, jeanette?

omg! i can't believe i was right a couple posts back! well, i guess its natural that those of us who've made the journey can see those little signs in others. congratulations! sorry it's taken me this long to say it! my kids don't let me get online much.....ugh.

They now have a 6 of Lilly up on eluxury, Erica. I am sorry the 8 didn't fit. I hope you had a good week in California.

moya, thanks for the tip. i wonder if they'll be marked down again?

do you think that mayle pieces will command higher prices on ebay now that it's closing? i've also been wondering whether the winter sales will be less doable because of the news.

i am so annoyed that the 6 showed up again because when they asked if i wanted to exchange it, i said, 'oh, no, it's sold out!'. i wish i had asked them to check! grrr...

well, at least you can wear yours! it is a truly lovely dress, i just wish i had tried it on earlier in the season. i think i'll go to louis this weekend and try on their mayle pieces in preparation for possible online purchases.

I go back and forth on whether the ebay prices will soar. Certainly, some sellers seem to be jacking prices up--but things aren't selling more generally in this economy. Also other labels that died quickly saw their stock tank (as in clothing). Katayone Adeli was huge about 7 years ago, vanished and the stuff was in Loehmanns. I think Mayle has more cachet but I am inclined to think there will be a rampage and then it will be another dormant label with no press attention to bolster the sales of the old pieces.

I have no idea what eluxury is up to with their discounts. I think the 6 was probably a return but it is worth keeping an eye open.

I hope I can get some Mayle this season too.
Off to teach...

Hi Erica, I have been well thanks, Just got a new job! YAY! I agree with Moya, I think eventually Mayle will be another dormant lable, I don't see the prices in ebay increase, infact they have been much lower then a year ago when items generally go over 200, now its more in the 100 mark, I just got the Leda dress on ebay. Eluxury has been offering extra 40 or 30% sale stocks for a short period of 3 or 4 days last month, their stock is also abit funny, I guess because they may get returns, sometimes when I check back the item that I was interested in becomes available again.

moya-
good luck with your teaching. our semester begins in two weeks....

jeanette-
congrats on your new job!!! that's really exciting, and i'm glad that you're doing well.

i hope you both are right about mayle becoming a dormant label. i would love to be able to pick up a few pieces on ebay, and hopefully in the shops, too. i'll be sure to keep an eye on Eluxury. i rarely go on that site, but now seems like a good time to keep track of their sales.

Congrats on the new job Jeanette--I hope it gives you more free time.

I suspect Mayle's final collection/sale will be crazy--especially in the NYC boutique, although I'm sure LaGarconne and Net-a-porter will have overpriced Mayle from several seasons ago still available this time next year. I'll also be trolling ebay for sizes 8 and 10 in items I missed.

Still, I think the cachet quickly fades when a label vanishes, especially as there are other lines, fashion week, etc. to grab attention. I know Mayle has a loyal following (like us) and some of them, again like us, will carry on looking for items for the next few years. Her stuff doesn't date as fast as most designers and there are older items I still crave. I personally would love the Izolda dress from fall and the one on ebay is a 2--I could fit into the 4 in that cut, but the 2 is too small. And I am waiting for Net-a-Porter to reduce Tana and Josefina.

I wish her final collection had been better. I like a lot of it but it isn't her best. Her resort/holiday lines are among her best so I am sure I'll drop way too much money in the sale. From fall, I want at least one coat and several dresses. Of course, I'll likely not be alone.

Teaching is fine but I still have to finish my book this month so it is going to be insane!

erica said...

moya-
good luck wrapping up your book! which coat are you thinking about buying? if only i didn't own so many coats already, i would buy the Ludovine.

On my wish list are the Reiko dress, Kaiya top, Eniko dress, and Yves dress. The more I look at the fall collection, the more I like it, but I'm also waiting for the Resort/Holiday before making any decisions.

We might go to NYC for a day next week before classes start. I'll probably spend most of my time trying on Mayle and eating ramen...

I want the Odette coat in navy. I think I'd wear it for years (I already have two Mayle and three Lyell coats so I'm thinking investments in my coat future as I want all of them to last). I love the cut of Ludovine but the fabric is scratchy and I have major wool allergies so I'd be covered in hives.

Also, in no particular order, I'd like the blue Ebba dress, Yves in rose, Kaori dress, Eniko in the brighter paradiso print (I suspect this will be the dress that sells out first), Mitsuko top, Aurelie top, Tama dress, Sabbia top. Of course, I'll be lucky to get more than three or four pieces. I sound horribly greedy but it's really the thought of stocking up before it all vanishes forever. Or at least, is only found on ebay and lagarconne.

Have fun in NYC. When are you coming into town?
