target skirt

i've always been a bit envious of people who fill their beautiful wardrobes with affordable clothing from target, h&m, gap, zara, and forever 21. granted, i have a love-hate relationship with cheap clothing (manufacturing conditions, quality, fit), especially since i lack the sewing skills to alter less than perfect finds. but still, i'm secretly annoyed with myself for spending way too much money on clothing, especially when i don't end up giving certain pieces the attention they deserve.

martha of uniform-studio recently did a flickr set of how she incorporates target clothing and accessories within her unique sense of style. i noticed a particularly nice dark skirt with a subtle sheen in one of her photographs. apparently it's from target's liz lange maternity line. hannah and sally also have this skirt.

today i went to target and found it for $10. unlike these other stylish women, however, i actually need this skirt to function as intended.

i had to read that twice to make sure i was understand it correctly! (my slow brain was like, skirt, maternity skirt, functioning as intended, wait I know this means something....)

Congratulations! You dropped a subtle hint a week or so ago when you posted a onesie that you purchased in portland. I hope that you received the check for the miu miu skirt!

Oh, how exciting! Congratulations!

by the way, re: your reservations about chain-store shopping - i've always found great staples (blazers, tees, etc.) that fit well and are well-made for the price at Club Monaco. their sale racks are pretty awesome.

erica said...

leanne-
i did indeed. i've been terribly lazy about going to the bank. thanks so much for the lovely note!

miss sophie-
i do love club monaco, but the shops here always seem to have a meager sale section. nothing like i used to remember on the west coast. i should drop by more often, though.

Congratulations! That's great news Erica. I was wondering if that's why you got the baby clothes in Maine.

I also second the Club Monaco recommendation. Their clothes wear well (great skirts and sweaters although their dresses fit strangely). Until recently, they've had great sales but I think they're trying not to do this anymore judging from the NYC stores.

Also, did you hear that Mayle is closing? I actually thought Lyell would be the one to close soon. I'm shocked. Resort/Holiday will be the last collection.

moya--
oh my goodness, i can't believe it! that's really sad news.

there's a net-a-porter 20% coupon "SUMMER" for select sale items. most of the mayle is included (tana dress $414 plus 20% more). i might get the Hildie dress even though it's a size 10. i can probably have it altered, or who knows, maybe i won't need to for awhile!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!! i'm so happy for you!!! what a fun and subtle way to announce it -- and the skirt looks adorable!

SASHA said...

wow. congratulations! and a fantastic way to announce. you look great in the skirt, as well, with what you paired it with.

Have you seen the Mayle sale on eluxury, Erica? the original discounts weren't great, but they have an extra 40% off. I just bit the bullet and got Lilly for $260. Cat hair be damned, there isn't going to be much more Mayle ever so I wanted to get something I loved. I know you like it too and a size 8, in this cut, will certainly accommodate you as you increase in size!

erica said...

ooh, thanks for the eluxury tip. now i'm kicking myself for never trying it on. i wish they still had it in a 6. i suppose i can get it in an 8 and alter it later when i (hopefully) return to my regular size.

cat hair be damned, indeed. actually, ever since i started using the furminator, the house has become much much cleaner.

so, no on the hildie, yes on on the lilly. it'll make an excellent holiday party dress.

no more mayle, sigh. i was just considering selling a sweater, but now i think i'll keep it. already feeling nostalgic!

I'm glad you got the Lilly too! It is really beautiful. Like you, I had a Mayle piece (a dress) I was thinking of selling just because I never wear it but now I will keep it. I am so shocked about this and it is sad.

I tried Lilly on. It's definitely a true to size 8, but it drapes beautifully and is one of those dresses that easily accommodates going up or down a size. The back is stunning.

And I do wish net-a-porter would finally reduce their Mayle resort/holiday/fall 07 to a reasonable price. I want Gia and Tana but they are insanely expensive for pieces from 2-3 collections ago. To me, 20% off a 30-40% reduction (which is really about 12% off the full price) is pathetic. I dithered over Lilly today in case the price fell further, but I couldn't risk losing her/it. At least when Mayle closes I'll basically be spending no money at all on clothes.

erica said...

i don't understand why it takes net-a-porter years to reduce their prices. grrr...i'm glad i went with the lilly, though.

i remember seeing the lilly for less elsewhere, but of course i waited too long.

i agree, i have a feeling that my crazy shopping days are numbered. apc is good once in awhile, but there's nothing like mayle to really tug at your heartstrings. oh well!

hannah said...

congratulations! it is such a nice skirt, and i am guessing it looks much better as it's intended. i need to do something about the back of mine.

Congratulations! Will be one happy baby with a very very stylish mom!

I think maternity wear is a great way to experiment with mixing high and low pieces (especially since our sizes fluctuate over the period and it won't justify spending too much).

erica said...

i did an inventory of things i could wear over the next six months, and hopefully i won't have to buy too much aside from a pair of jeans and a few strategically ruched camisoles and long sleeved tops.

should be fun!

I just got my Lilly today and imagine you'll have yours soon. It is more beautiful than I remember and the workmanship is amazing. Plus the silk feels so beautiful. You will love it--it is one of her most amazing dresses ever. And it should work through the new few months of pregnancy or so for you, although it is more gathered in the back than the front.

erica said...

Oh, I hope my Lilly comes soon! I'm leaving on Sunday for a week in southern California, and I'm worried that all those things I ordered will arrive while I'm away. I can't wait for it to arrive. Ever since the furminator entered my life, I've felt more hopeful about wearing things like ivory silk :)

Moya said...

I imagine it will. Mine came at 9 am today and Boston isn't so far from NYC. I was surprised--I got FedEx ground shipping and it was only processed yesterday. They ship from Tennessee btw. I was so impressed I thought about buying more of their Mayle sale items but the discount is over and virtually everything is sold out or not available in my size. At least the announcement of Mayle's closure came during the eluxury sale.

Also InhabitNY are having an online labor day sale. I just got a great short sleeved long cashmere cardigan for $88 (down from around $280)--another one worth checking out.
