second chance a.p.c.

a beautiful saturday afternoon meant a bike ride along the Charles to Newbury St. i wanted to stop by Dress and Barneys. i was bored by much of what i saw, especially as every other item was 3.1 phillip lim. i know lots of people love his work, and god knows the man can deliver, but i'm not convinced that the quality is up to par. i feel like his designs are basically a more expensive version of what h&m can do. MARC by marc jacobs is like that, too, sometimes, especially with those $80 t-shirts. i love lots of his coats, though. phillip lim? not so much. some of his knits are lovely, but you could probably buy something similar for less.

the one thing i forgot to check for was band of outsiders new women's label, 'boy,' which is apparently only being carried at barneys and opening ceremony. sometimes i wish i were a boy, or at least had a straighter, leaner figure. that must be why i love shopping for my husband.

anyway, being so disappointed in my shopping excursion and $2 bagel and cream cheese at the food court, i decided to stop by stel's. their 60% off summer sale is still going on, and to my surprise, i found this lovely a.p.c. dress that i had wanted so badly last fall. the cut is a little bit depression-era tenant farmer's wife, which i secretly love. but it's the print that really kills me. sometimes i hate a.p.c.'s prints. like the butterflies that touitou likes to do? no. no. no. my sense of irony is not refined enough to appreciate such things. but this particular geometric print is awesome. i tried to buy the blouse version last december in chicago, but they were out of my size.

so, when faced with an opportunity to buy something i figured would only make appearances on ebay, i couldn't say no.

a.p.c. fall '06 dress--$185, on sale for $85 at stel's

lucky lucky you. i've wanted that dress forever! $85?! why didn't i go to stel's when i was in boston recently? it was on my list, but i got busy.

i love your blog. you officially have awesome taste in fashion. i'm just going to live vicariously through you because i'm too poor right now to buy any more clothes. does your husband ever bug you about shopping? mine does.

stel's is my favorite store in boston, hands down. great selection, really knowledgeable people.

i can't even remember how i found your blog, but i love all your sewing projects. i really need to learn how to sew. my husband bugs me about irresponsible shopping, but that hasn't stopped me yet!

awesome deal on the dress!

i feel the same way about p lim. his stuff is lovely in theory, but i'm always disappointed by the fit and the quality in person.

i either love or hate apc prints too. although honestly, i think i just prefer solids. haha. i'm personally horribly disappointed in the winter collection. i swear the man is slacking. :(

sherry--
i'm feeling a bit of the blahs with the new a.p.c., too. the only thing i really love is the toggle raincoat. but impulse and stel's both seem to be getting in different things, dare i say, better things? and i haven't been to the store yet, so maybe there's still hope. fall '06 was really amazing, and this summer's madras had some nice pieces, but overall, meh. i'll have to do an a.p.c. post after i've seen what's out there.

THe APC dress is adorable and looks great on you. And I agree that this year APC is a little blah, I also am sick to death of 3.1 P. Lim- is his publicist dressing all the fashion magazine editors? Every magazine is saturated with his clothes which don't even compare to the quality of Katayone Adeli (who he used to assist when she had her own line).

thanks! i can't wait to wear it on a non-cycling excursion.
you might be onto something with that theory of yours. even steven alan is stocking 3.1 phillip lim. i guess it photographs well, but i couldn't imagine wearing most of his pieces.
