collars

zara basic cotton shirt

club monaco bernice shirt

my j.crew order arrived, and i'm having second thoughts about the silk collar tee. i think the short sleeves are too casual, but the collar is oddly small in proportion to the rest of the shirt, which cardigans and blazers only accentuate.

so, now what?
i could get a chambray shirt, which would probably be a useful addition to my wardrobe. but i'm not sure how i feel about chambray and a navy eyelet pencil skirt.

or i could get a simple button-up shirt. zara would work, although i'm drawn to the collar detail on the bernice shirt at club monaco.

oh, and i'm pretty sure i need a pair of black ankle boots. flats don't look quite right with the skirt. i may have to go back to gravity pope and get the rachel comey mars. i'm also thinking of trying on the rag & bone newbury boots, which are apparently very comfortable. as someone who doesn't wear heels, i'm a bit of a skeptic.

edited: just noticed that the bernice is rayon. oof, not such a fan.

RealReal has the Mars boots in gunmetal for $145. but today I just received an entirely different kind of No.6 boots (thought i got one in shearling dark brown but i instead got maple and normal leather that is wedge!!!)

I find the Coclico booties to be comfortable too (although heel is 1.5inches)

What do you think of gunmetal gray? I've never seen it in person and photos vary. Sometimes it looks very dark, other times it's a flat lighter gray that's hard to describe.

I think a chambray shirt would be too casual. Have you looked at the silk shirts at Madewell? The Rag and Bone boots are really nice, but they hit higher on the ankle than the Mars, if that is something that matters to you. I also like the Clarks Water Row lace-up. The heel is about half an inch higher than the Mars, but they are still really easy to walk in.

alas, no madewells in canada!

silk might be an option. if only everlane shipped to canada (hopefully they will soon). i definitely prefer the look of the mars low ankle, but i bet the higher ankle makes the newburys more comfortable.

I like the ffixxed white shirt on sale at anaise, though maybe its' collar is a bit on the small side as well?

i think the ffixxed collar is a bit bigger. that would be a nice basic, and the price is right!

just wanted to mention the RC putter low boot in black at LAG, it might not be the right look or shape , but the heel is low! good luck with your search

i recommend Everlane silk blouses https://www.everlane.com/collections/womens-silk-blouses , certainly the right price. I've got two and the fit is spot on too. It's sold out in most colors but there is still white..! It is slightly sheer but you should be OK with a nude bra I think.

Thanks, eve! I really like the Putter boot, as well as the Dorsey, which is very like the Mars except with a flat heel.

Accentuate, are all of the Everlane silk blouses slightly sheer, or just the white?

Just the white. The black and navy is solid. Prob light grey too. They said they are restocking in April and they may have shipping to Canada by then..

I love the Mars booties, for sure. Are you committed to the pinwheel skirt? To me, it skews a little whimsical and young for an academic job interview (even a second interview). What about some kind of tapered and/or cropped trousers (I tried some nice ones on at Aritzia recently, of all places), a silk or cotton blouse (Everlane, Equipment, whatever) and a blazer (if needed) with the Mars booties?

(I'm a long-time reader, but can't recall if I've posted a comment before or not. Love your style. We emailed once or twice about baby carriers back when we each only had one kid.)

Agreed - campus interviews typically involve a suit, or at least slacks and a blazer. You can still add an interestingly-coloured silk shirt and scarf / jewellery, but I wouldn't risk looking too casual. You want to impress deans, chairs, faculty, and even students as professional. There's always the chance to dress creatively - after the job is secured!

A quick plug for non-iron brooks brothers shirt for women, some have very cute collar detail with a line of color stitching and the non-iron is a god send. In the sale section, the price is better than madewell and jcrew. Tailored is bad, fittest and classic fit are good. The website is poorly styled but out of context, the shirts are great.

Brianna and CyberMe--
Thanks for you thoughts on the skirt! A friend who had 3 flybacks this season, 2 at SLACs, said to go with a more polished version of what you would teach in. Another friend said absolutely no to cropped pants, and a third thought a suit would make me look younger than I already do (since I don't wear makeup or blow out my hair).

It's hard to decide, but I'm going to stick with the skirt, pair it with a SA blazer and the ankle boots, and hope that the skirt and top (under a plain gray crewneck sweater) will come off as interesting details rather than the focal point.

Thanks for the BB advice, Mona! There wasn't anything on sale when I went last week, but I'll keep them in mind in the future.

I agree with the 'no' to cropped pants, and I wouldn't go with "teaching outfit +" either. Of course, only you know the culture of where you're interviewing. Still, erring on the side of polished professional is safest, I would say, even at a SLAC (hence the suit). Either way, you're right that the focal point is ultimately not the outfit. Enjoy!
