Basic black ankle boots

I love my Rachel Comey Mars boots. They're beautiful and relatively comfortable as long as I stay indoors or in a car. Hah. So I wear them at conferences, and that's pretty much it.

If my classrooms were in the same building as my office, I would be ok with wearing them, but I have to walk 10-15 minutes each way twice a week. I'm a wimp, I can't handle the heel. Stephanie recommended Loeffler Randall's Felix boot, which looks great. I was thinking maybe the Madewell Hayes boot would work. The price is right with their current sale (20% off $100+ and 30% off $200+ WINWIN), but I don't know if they're comfortable enough. Has anyone tried them on? I need something that's sleek even with a flat heel. I don't need forever shoes, just something to get me through the fall and spring. Winter means nothing but tall UGG Adirondacks.

Madewell Hayes boot, $228

Loeffler Randall Felix boot, $395

I feel the same way about my Mars boots- I love them but I do so much more walking in this city that I need flatter boots. I can't offer advice on the Madewell boots as I haven't purchased them. For lower, walkable heeled boots, I prefer the Dieppa Restrepo Camilla. I find that it has less clunk and weight than the Mars so I find it easier to walk longer stretches of time, even with 2+ inch heel. I also like the flat Med boot. I know they are more investment pieces than one season buys ...

I meant, the flat Mer boot.

Oops, I probably shouldn't have reacquainted myself with the Mer boot. Sigh.

Personally, I wouldn't trust Madewell for quality and (therefore) comfort. I've seen their leather goods in-store, and they've always struck me as cheaply made. I'm a self-declared quality snob, though, and haven't been impressed with any US shoe brands, so make of that what you will.

The Mer boots are gorgeous. You might also try this this brand.

European leather goods I find to be cheaper and much, much better made. These aren't heirloom quality by any means, but they'd serve their purpose for around $200. I have a pair of sandals and a handbag from the make, and I'm very happy with both.

Erica, It's not as versatile or safe a color as the cognac brown or black, but there are some Mer boots deeply discounted in a dark blue suede. It's a gorgeous color but not as safe. They were $150.

So glad you're posting again! Another thing: Madewell has a 15% off "educator" discount - basically, if you attend or teach at university and have the ID to prove it (in-store only) you get the discount, even on sale stuff. Having said that, I wouldn't pay those prices for their boots. I like them for chic basics but I prefer to go high end (when possible) with shoes. Do you know about noihsaaf bazaar on instagram?

I have two pairs of the Dieppa Restrepo Mer boots and they are hands down my favorites from this line. Comfortable, look great, have just a little bit of an edge. I can't say enough about them. They are expensive and never seem to go on sale, alas. But I wouldn't trade them for anything Acne, Rachel Comey, etc., etc.

I have one pair of Madewell boots (not these) and while I was concerned about the quality, they are actually really great--as is my leather wallet/pouch. I'm planning on buying some of their oxfords this year. I'm also a shoe snob but more for comfort and durability these days. Try them on if you can but I have found Madwell's customer service to be excellent and they will even do returns on final sale if you fill in the bizrate surveys or contact them after you receive the item. Hope this helps.

If you can find Fiorentini + Baker boots on sale, though, those would be my first choice for comfort and longevity.

Urgh, the Mars boots basically put me off Rachel Comey forever. They didn't work for walking at all - narrow in the front, loose in the back. It looks good if you're a mannequin.

The best and most comfortable heeled boots I own are the APC suede ones with the stack heel they put out every year. Unfortunately, it's been almost 5 years maybe since they had it in black.

That said, I've tried on the LR ones and didn't find them to be too comfortable. The soles were somehow too thin. HOWEVER, I also tried on these Zero + Maria Cornejo ones: http://www.lagarconne.com/store/item.htm?itemid=26569&sid=2656&pid=

And well, let's just say I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a good discount.

I love my LR Felix boots! Comfortable and well-made. But if I ever get the chance to score a pair Dieppa Restrepo Mer boots, I'd go for them.

I have a pair of the Madewell Charley boots and they are so comfortable! The quality is consistent with the price, I think. Mine have held up very well despite how rough I've been on them (I wore them all winter long through rain, sleet, snow, and gross salted sidewalks). I wear my Mars boots a lot, but I also like having a less expensive boot when the weather gets bad.

One pair I've been thinking about is the Hope Survivor boots as I think I need to replace the no 6's this year as the shearling is almost all gone on the soles! I liked the look of the Hope ones because the heel isn't too big and they are shearling lined and would be good in the snow. They definitely are a little more rugged / casual though. why is it so hard to find the perfect flat but cute comfy boot?

i second (or third?) the dieppa mer boot in black. they are fantastic and pretty flat. wore them all over paris and walked probably 5 miles or more daily. so comfortable, and the leather just gets softer and softer with age. i am also a huge fan of the acne pistol boots for a more stepped up ankle boot with a manageable heel. but for the price and comfort, the mer boots win every time.
