the trench

i wasn't able to go to the steven alan sample sale last week, but a dear friend ameliorated the situation with a heddy shirt (and a book of fiendishly good stories...and a cashmere sweater...did i mention how awesome she is?).

it seems a lot of people are feeling the trench love. hopefully the weather will be mild enough that i can wear mine to the sale since it's roomy enough for both me and leon.

stripes and florals

image from la garconne

image from stels

i saw this T by Alexander Wang striped top paired with a floral rachel comey skirt at stels last week and thought it would make such a lovely outfit for spring. or for 'resort' wear, if you're going anywhere warm this winter. the top is very sheer and lightweight, but drapes amazingly thanks to the rayon+linen. of course, i'm bundled up in wool socks and blankets, so this is merely an exercise in wishful thinking.

you can get the top ($98) for 40% off with 40GRECHEN09 until Nov. 30. all regular priced items at standard deviation are 40%, and sale items are 20% off (20GRECHEN09).

i, for one, am saving my pennies for the sale in less than three weeks. wiksten at 40% off? not to mention my inability to say no to mociun tees and dresses. new york sure has a way of parting me with my money.

rachel comey rosebud print, pt. 2

i love this print. and now i love it even more in this dress.

writer's block dress, $587 at la garconne. the name alone speaks volumes of my current state of mind. sigh. please, please go on sale.

edit: also at zoe

winter's coming

oilily warm suit courtesy of the grandparents

are you ready? leon is.

we're flying back to cambridge on wednesday. i'm overwhelmed by deadlines (terribly important life-changing ones) and stuck with a serious case of the mean reds. plus, my diaper bag still hasn't arrived, and all i bought at south coast plaza was a truffle from godiva.

mean reds, yeah.

beklina and domahoka halloween sale

two of my favorite shops are offering 25% off to celebrate halloween.

rachel comey penpal boots in whiskey for $258 (only size 9 left, probably fits 8.5 best)

steven alan heddy shirt plaid ombre, $141 (size m, runs a little large, i would go with a s)

use 25boo at beklina site-wide
mociun sun moon earrings (the turquoise adds a gorgeous pop of color)

virginia johnson wool shawls (i love the bulldog print in charcoal)

and...
leon (fully recovered from the swine flu) wishes you a happy and safe halloween!

the un-diaper bag + revised shopping list for fall

so i ordered this not rational hansel diaper bag.

i was considering a tote bag from dwell studio, but i really wanted more outside pockets. kate spade also has a cute tote bag with handy outside pockets, but the price tag is a bit too high for just nylon--plus, i don't think it attaches to strollers.

i still think that this market tote would make an excellent diaper bag. not only is it the cheapest, but you could definitely use it afterward.

i'm not really a bag person, but i wanted to get myself something nice. i've noticed that since leon arrived, i've had a hard time buying myself things. it's like 3 for him, 1 for me...

i am, however, keeping an eye out for the jeffrey monteiro peacoat. so far, i've seen it at metier, bird, and totokaelo (whoops, looks like it sold out). perhaps we should keep a running list of stockists?

my revised shopping list:
mociun dress in sticks and stones print
apc petit standards
rachel comey familiar metal dress in moss green (available at stels)
steven alan gathered sweater in oatmeal and burnt orange

of course, if i happen to be at the steven alan outpost, i'm sure i'll throw caution to the wind and buy as many button-down shirts as will fit me.

shopping in the oc

it's in the 80s here in south orange county, so i can't wear my No. 6 boots. leon's been sick with a nasty cold, and yesterday i came down with a 24 hour stomach bug. so, we haven't done much exploring, but hopefully next week will be more promising. i'm on the hunt for a diaper bag that doesn't look too babyish.

unfortunately shopping in the oc is less than exciting. i bought this plaid top at anthropologie, for lack of anywhere else to buy at the irvine spectrum. i did, however, find a shop, laguna supply, in downtown laguna beach. it carries steven alan and etoile isabel marant. i didn't try anything on because my mom was scandalized by the prices. maybe next week leon and i will make a quick visit there.

we'll be back in cambridge in about three weeks, and then it's off to nyc to visit friends!

autumn in california

yes, more stripes.

leon and i are off to southern california for a few weeks starting thursday. i have to give a paper at a conference in oakland, and then more research and writing in orange county. by the time we return, all the leaves will have fallen. we're hoping to go apple picking on wednesday since this will likely be our last fall in new england.

shoes that work (no. 6 clog boots)

i'm so happy with my new no. 6 boots. i'm glad i went with the dark brown, it's dark enough to go with everything in my closet. the 40s seem to fit perfectly, although only time will tell. so far, i think this has been my most successful shoe purchase in since my frye paige riding boots.

creatures of comfort--no.6 boots on sale

creatures of comfort is having a 15% off sale on all shoes, sweaters and jackets.

if you like the black or tan no. 6 ankle boots, they have a few sizes left for $293. mine haven't arrived yet, hopefully tomorrow. i ordered a 40, which they recommended for a size 8.5 shoe.

UPDATE:
the 40s in black are already gone! i am crossing my fingers that mine arrive tomorrow, the weather is perfect for them.

no. 6 clog boots

image from supernice
i can't find a photo of the short boots in fudge, so here's the tall boot version.

as much as i love the rachel comey short penpal boots (especially in navy), i'm pretty sure my feet would thank me to abstain.

matthew kindly reminded me that the quoddy tracker boots wouldn't work with the winters here, especially the salt on the sidewalks.

so i ordered these no.6 short boots in a dark brown. they're supposedly weather-proof, and i'm hoping they're comfortable. the shopgirl was super sweet and helpful. they're being made right now and should arrive by friday.

i still want the quoddys, but i should give my bank account time to recover.

my love of stripes knows no bounds. i'm happy to see that i'm in good company....(merci nancy!)

speaking of chambray shirts

roberta jane's post made me think of elly's shop update. i am cursing my bad luck with shoes, but will try to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

if i buy a pair of rachel comey shoes, i will probably need an insole to help with my bad arches.
last night i was leaning toward the penpal short boots in navy
this morning i told myself to stick with flats like the dewey tassel boot, but can i do tassels? i'm not sure.
and then jeana's and alyson's posts on the barbaro buckle boot make me think that my life needs a heel like that.

of course i then remind myself of my bad track record with rachel comey shoes.

don't these quoddy tracker boots look comfortable? but they aren't nearly as pretty. oh, and these look very promising, although the exchange rate is never ever favorable. i will have to put them on my sale watch.

then i tell myself i should just make a decision already and move on with my life. or maybe i could visit stephanie and try on all of these lovely shoes in person.

EDIT:
revolve clothing has a 20% discount code (until the 30th), INSTYLE09. i'm not sure, but i think it will work on their 'Forward' site. the dewey tassel boots would only be $264. free shipping both ways makes Revolve one of my favorite sites even though i've returned the two things i ordered from them. they also have the Steven Alan Soma dress in purple paisley (only a small left), and loads of Current/Elliott jeans.

repetto zizi in distressed brown

staring at my feet against the ceiling. dreaming of outfits for my zizis.

i am feeling torn about these. they are so soft and beautifully made. it's like wearing slippers, exactly what my silly feet need.

but, i ordered the 39.5, and the tip of my big toe is a little pinched when i walk. i know they'll stretch out some, but how much of it will be lengthwise?

unfortunately creatures of comfort no longer has the 40s. they have 40.5, but i think those would be too long. the tannery in harvard square has them in black, so i'm going to try them on tomorrow. matthew is convinced i should return them. i am loathe to do this because i've obsessed about them for so long. maybe i'll keep them, and if they don't work out in a month or so, i guess i can sell them.

incidentally, i tried these quoddy mocs at stels today. they're like walking on pillows. amazing.

UPDATE:
the tannery doesn't have the zizis in 40 or 40.5. i'm sending mine back. i won't exchange them for the 40.5 because if they're too big, i'll have spent over $50 in shipping.

well, those quoddys are looking better and better to me. and the no. 6 clog boots, too.
